As part of the workshop entitled “In the company of Veronica” at the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science in Split, elementary school students were introduced to plants of the genus Veronica thanks to the herbarium created for this occasion, their importance and application in medicine, botany, pharmaceutical and other industries. Precisely because of the above, plants of the genus Veronica are the subject of research project IP-2020-02-8425 (CROVeS-PhyBA) of the Croatian Science Foundation. Students showed great interest in this type of plants, their natural habitat and collection, isolation of essential oil and hydrosol using microwave-assisted extraction, identification of compounds characteristic of these types of plants and testing of their biological activity. We hope for their enthusiasm and participation at the Science Festival next year, and perhaps a future scientist is hiding among them.
